To own a piece of Royal Albert is to have a piece of history in your hands. Originally established by Thomas Wild in 1896 (the business then named Thomas C Wild & Co Ltd) it was established at the Albert Works in Longton, Staffordshire commemorating the birth of Price Albert, who subsequently became King George VI.  Royal Albert China was officially created in 1904, firstly becoming Royal Albert Crown china, then simply Royal Albert China.

It’s a brand that’s inspired by the English country garden and the national flower, the rose. This quintessential English grace, elegance, and romance accounts for Royal Albert’s timeless popularity in tableware. And the result? A touch of class for modern lifestyles that effectively fuses indulgent floral motifs with shabby chic feel. With Royal Albert you have the best of the classic and contemporary worlds.

Many early shapes were fluted and included floral motifs and rich patterns in shades of red, green and blue in the style of popular Japanese Imari patterns. Above all, Royal Albert's early success was linked to an uncanny ability to cater for all tastes - from the modest to the most expensive. The first Royal commemoratives were produced as early as 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.

Royal Albert is renowned for the fineness, whiteness and purity of the bone china ceramic body with sensual and informal shapes and floral designs. The English fondness for cottage gardens and shady woods naturally inspired thousands of designs, many of which have proved to be a popular success for over 50 years.

Probably the most well known and still collected and sought after today is “Old Country Roses”, closely followed by the blue “Moonlight Rose” and the beautiful pink “Lady Carlisle”.

Today, Royal Albert is part of the Allied English Potteries Ltd following mergers with the Lawley Group, Paragon and Royal Doulton.  In the later part of the 1900’s, several identical patterns were released with either the Paragon, the Royal Albert or the Royal Doulton backstamp, each being synonymous with the other. The Royal Albert name was discontinued in 2002 when Royal Doulton relocated its production to Indonesia.  The Royal Albert brand name, is now owned by Wedgwood.
